Hanson – Shout It Out

Back in 1997, I don’t think anyone would have thought that all these years later, Hanson would not only release their fifth studio album, but that it would be really good, too. Shout It Out is ambitious, wonderfully fun pop from beginning to end. Hanson may not dominate the radio airwaves anymore, but Isaac, Taylor and Zac really know how to write solid pop songs and could probably teach the pop stars today a few things.

Keane – Night Train

Whenever a band decides to do something a little more experimental — like mixing genres — it’s a huge risk. Especially when you take British band Keane, who are typically known for more piano-driven music, and throw in a rapper. But luckily for Keane, it works. Amazingly well. With the 8-song EP Night Train, Keane has managed to retain their sound, while at the same time presenting songs that are different and refreshing.

Citizen Cope – The Rainwater LP

It’s unfortunate that The Rainwater LP is being released in the middle of winter, when the east coast is being annihilated by a snow storm. Because what I’d really like to do is put this, Citizen Cope’s new self-released album, on in my car and drive around with the windows down, but instead I’m snowed in fantasizing about summer. It’s an album that would lend itself very well to a lazy summer day.

Anberlin LIVE @ Club Zoo

Janelle Monae – Metropolis

When Janelle Monae was signed to Diddy’s Bad Boy Records, he hailed her as “the most important signing of my career.” With the creativity and talent she possesses, he may have a point.

Placebo – Battle for the Sun

When your band is known for somewhat dark, heavier music, making an album described as “hard pop” which draws comparisons to New Order can be a dangerous move.

Punchline LIVE @ New Hazlett Theater

I’ve seen local band Punchline enough times now to know what to expect. But the catch is, with Punchline, you can never truly know what to expect. Especially when the band is filming a live DVD.
Those waiting in line outside the New Hazlett Theater were greeted by bassist Chris Fafalios, camera in hand, taking pictures [...]
