“It’s got a beat and you can dance to it,†is one of those tried and true music review clichés. It’s not an insult, since the statement is generally positive, but at the same time it’s not always an overwhelmingly positive response either. If that’s the best you can say about the song, odds are it’s far from musical genius.
So, it’s with a heavy heart that I have to admit my general reaction to the Love Grenades CD single “Tigers in the Fire†was “It’s got a beat and you can dance to it.â€
The Los Angeles based group puts forth a good effort. And perhaps it’s hard to judge exactly how I felt about them since four of the six songs on the CD were different versions of the title track, “Tigers in the Fire.†Don’t get me wrong, I like remixes and in dance music they’re pretty much unavoidable. But it was really hard for me to get a feel for what the band could do since I was for the most part listening to the same thing from them over and over again, just reinterpreted by different producers. The original version and one remix would have sufficed, the original and three remixes seems like overkill.
But, on a more positive note: Tigers in the Fire is a definite dance party song. With sultry and suggestive lyrics coupled with a catchy hook and a vaguely disco-esque sound, the song sounds like something that could easily find its place in regular rotation at a dance club. And the vocals avoid sounding over-produced, a trap a lot of dance groups fall into far too often.
However, in general, while the sound is good, it is also rather generic. Which shouldn’t dismiss the fact that it is extremely catchy and dance-able. The hook is delightfully ear worm-y and threatens to get itself stuck in your head at the most inconvenient times. There’s just nothing about the sound that catches your ears and makes you go “Oh, Love Grenades!†rather than “Oh, good dance music!â€
So who’s this for? If you’re the sort of person who has the soundtracks from every version of DDR on your iPod, you will probably love it. I suggest that anyone who is a fan of acts like Lady Gaga and Cobra Starship at least visit the group’s MySpace and give them a listen. Dance club DJs looking for something that will keep the energy in the room going and fit nicely in the middle of a set should consider “Tigers in the Fire†for that purpose. But if you’re not generally a dance fan, you should feel free to pass on this.
